Executive: Comprises the officers of the College and chairpersons of the standing committees and directs the work of all committees.

Faculties: Established and co-ordinates a network of 37 faculties at local level.

Membership: 2,630 members and associates in the College comprising over 85% of practising GPs in the Republic of Ireland.

The Irish College General Practitioners (ICGP) is the professional body for general practice in Ireland. The College was founded in 1984 and is based in Lincoln Place, Dublin 2. The College's primary aim is to serve the patient and the general practitioner by encouraging and maintaining the highest standards of general medical practice. It is the representative organisation on education, training and standards in general practice.

The College is the recognised body for the accreditation of specialist training in general practice in Ireland and is recognised by the Medical Council as the representative academic body for the specialty of general practice. At an international level the College is a member of the World Organisation of National Colleges and Academies and Academic Associations of General Practice (WONCA).

College Activities

The activities of the ICGP include:

  • Teaching, training and education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Accreditation of the fourteen specialist training programmes in general practice.
  • The College is the examining body for Membership in General Practice (MICGP).
  • Promotion of continuing education, professional development and research.
  • Practice management support - through training, advice and consultancy.
  • Promotion of general practitioner health.
  • Public relations and interaction with the media on behalf of the profession.
  • Make available relevant publications for, and on behalf of, its members.
  • Give informed advice to its members and to the government when requested.

College Structure

The College is made up of a Council, Executive, standing committees and task groups and is represented at a local level by the 37 faculties.

Council: The Council is the decision-making body of the College. Each faculty has at least one representative and there are also several places filled by election, co-option and ex-officio appointment.

Executive: The Executive comprises the officers of the College and chairpersons of the standing committees. The Executive directs and integrates the work of all committees.

Faculties: The College has established and co-ordinates a network of 37 faculties at local level. Each faculty is formally structured with its own bylaws which are subject to approval by Council.

Membership: There are 2,515 members and associates in the College comprising over 90% of practising GPs in the Republic of Ireland. There are also members in Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other overseas locations.
