Muscoskeletal Course

Musculoskeletal problems are responsible for many consultations in Primary Care. The ICGP and the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (RCSI/RCPI) have jointly developed a diploma in MSK examination and management to further develop skills in this area.

The first Diploma course started in September this year with the first of four clinical weekends taking place in RCSI. The course is oversubscribed with 21 doctors. There are three tutors for the course.

The second clinical weekend took place in the ICGP and the photographs demonstrate the hands on nature of what happens during these weekends. The candidates are provided with reading material on red flags and common conditions prior to the weekend. During the clinical sessions clinical examination of the joints is the central theme. In addition acute management, rehabilitation and injection techniques are discussed and demonstrated. The candidates have a log book which allows them to highlight difficulties that may have developed, but also hopefully shows the way in which their knowledge is increasing. The feedback and interaction has allowed the tutors to actively develop the course to meet the needs of the participants.
