The College was delighted to welcome Minister Roisin Shortall TD to open the Winter Meeting. Addressing over 300 conference delegates, Minister Shortall highlighted the Department of Health's plan to introduce free GP care for all by 2015 and universal health insurance by 2016.
She said that GP fees for the 56,000 registered as having long-term illnesses would be abolished in early March 2012, followed in 2013 by the abolition of fees for the 50,000 on the high-dependency drugs scheme. At present, three-quarters of the health budget is spent on chronic disease management, but the Minister said the clinical care programme would shift this from the hospitals to community- Minister Roisin Shortall addressing the based care.
