I wish to clarify the position of the "Mirena" IUS as a contraceptive in women with epilepsy who are taking enzyme inducing anticonvulsants.

There is a theoretical risk that these anticonvulsants may reduce the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives, such as "Mirena". However, the influence of these drugs on the contraceptive efficacy of "Mirena" has not been studied. It is not believed to be of major importance due to the mainly local mechanisms of action of the device according to the manufacturers SPC which is supplied with "Mirena".

Hence they recommend that "Mirena" can be used as a contraceptive in women who are taking enzyme inducing anticonvulsants.
