Perhaps 4-6% of the elderly in Ireland are victims of abuse or neglect in some form and often by a family member. Professor James O'Brien (a UCD graduate and Chair of Family and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Louisville and currently a Visiting Professor at Trinity College) in collaboration with Professor Desmond O'Neill, Dr Claire Collins and Dr Ailis Ní Riain propose to survey Irish GPs with regards to their experience with this problem. This is based on the assumption that GPs are uniquely positioned to prevent and intervene in such cases. We would be very grateful if you could assist us with this research and complete the short questionnaire, should you receive one in the coming weeks.
