PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Hospital Placements: Years 1 & 2
From a selection of: general medicine, medicine for the elderly, psychiatry, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, emergency medicine and rehabilitation medicine.

Community Placements: Years 3 & 4
We offer placements in 20 different training practices located on the East Coast between Skerries and Gorey, Co Wexford.
Year 3: Full Year in Dedicated Training Practice
Year 4: Full Year in Dedicated Training Practice

Day Release Programme
Day Release Learning is held on campus in Belfield, UCD.

1. What the Programme provides:

  • The opportunity to develop competence in general practice.
  • An environment which facilitates personal and professional development.
  • A multi-disciplinary programme directing team.
  • A collaborative learning environment which facilitates adult learning.
  • Integration within the primary care team and wider community.
  • A commitment to continuing professional development.

2. A variety of teaching approaches are employed:

  • Small group learning.
  • Shared experience learning.
  • Collaborative learning.
  • Plenary seminar with all trainees participating.

3. Learning seminars are facilitated by:

  • Programme Directing team.
  • Trainees.
  • Visiting specialists.
  • Combination of the above.

4. Content of the Day:

  • Personal development.
  • Module on counselling and psychotherapy.
  • Research skills.
  • Practice management module.
  • Competency skills for GP.
  • Education through the arts.

The programme is funded by the Health Service Executive.
