Background

The North Eastern Regional Training Programme for General Practice established in 1992 is now a four-year training programme with an annual intake of 10 trainees. The scheme is overseen by a dynamic Steering Committee under the chairmanship of Dr Fionnuala Loughrey. A very attractive aspect of the scheme is its location in the north eastern counties with its rich rural landscape, large towns and with easy access to Dublin, Belfast and the east coast.

Administration and Teaching Centre

The Programme Administration and Teaching is located in HSE premises in Navan alongside Primary Care Services, Health Promotion and Public Health Specialists. Teaching and learning facilities are modern with a strong emphasis on IT skills relevant to general practice.

Assessment

All educational aspects of the programme are regularly reviewed and assessed.

Programme Structure

This is a four-year training programme from July 2005. The first and second years are based in hospital posts while the third and fourth years are general practice based.

Hospital Posts

First and second year posts are hospital based. Currently rotations are available in the specialties of A/E, dermatology, palliative care medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics/gynaecology, general medicine, psychiatry. These posts are based in Cavan General Hospital, Louth - Meath Hospital Group Departments of Psychiatry in Ardee and Navan and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and Our Lady's Hospital, Navan.

The hospital posts provide experience of a highly appropriate clinical case mix relevant to a career in general practice and are supervised by hospital consultants committed to recognising the educational needs of GP trainees.

Third and Fourth Year Posts

The registrar posts are in appointed teaching practices in the HSE North East region. All the practices have administrative, secretarial and nursing staff and medical records are computerised. These practices are participating in a regional Co-op for out of hours GP services. During this part of the programme, opportunities will be provided to develop areas of special interest and acquire advanced practice management skills.

Release Course

To complement the learning, which occurs in the hospital and practice posts, there is an active educational programme on Tuesdays for First Years and on Thursdays for Second, Third and Fourth Years at the Administration and Education Centre. Trainees are released from their posts to attend. First and Second Year trainees attend afternoon only - registrars full day. Group work is the norm with the emphasis being on learning rather than teaching. Trainees have a significant input into curriculum planning.

Research and Audit

The completion of a general practice based research or audit project is an essential requirement for achieving Satisfactory Completion of Training. The release course audit and research module provides all necessary assistance to meet this requirement.
