CAS Personal Folder

Instructions for Members of the Medical Council Specialist Division of the Register for General Practice

(Commencing Competence Assurance Structures (CAS) in 2009)

CME Requirements under the current voluntary structure

There will be a 5 year cycle of accreditation commencing from January 2009 and a minimum of 250 CME credits is required over this period. This equates to an average of 50 credits per year. Normally, one hour of educational activity equals one credit unless otherwise specified by the ICGP.

CME credits can be issued under the following four categories:

  1. Internal CME (Mandatory)
10 credits per annum minimum i.e. 50 credits per 5 year accreditation cycle.
  2. External CME (Mandatory)
20 credits per annum minimum i.e. 100 credits per 5 year accreditation cycle.
  3. Personal CME (Optional)
10 credits per annum maximum i.e. no more than 50 credits per 5 years accreditation cycle.
  4. Research, Examining, Accrediting, Training & Education (Optional)
20 credits per annum maximum i.e. no more than 100 credits per 5 year accreditation cycle.

The purpose of this Personal CAS Folder is to enable you to keep records of your CME activity and to advise you of how to do this.

  • Please note that Additional and new year summary sheets are available for download. Summary sheets will now only be posted by request.
  • Keep this Personal CAS Folder in a safe place.
  • Send the summary sheets only to the ICGP, 4-5 Lincoln Place, Dublin 2 in January each year and retain a copy for your records.
  • You will receive a certificate of your CME credits after the end of the five-year cycle.
  • You will be requested by the Medical Council to forward this certificate to verify your activity over the 5-year cycle.

For External CME (Meetings) there are 3 steps:

  1. Sign an attendance register at the meeting.
  2. Collect your CAS attendance certificate* at the meeting and keep it in your Personal CAS Folder in a safe place.
  3. Record your attendance and relevant credits for each meeting in your summary sheet under the external CME category.

Do not send back your certificates of attendance and/or satisfactory completion for external CME to the ICGP at the end of the year. Send only the summary sheets and retain a copy in your Personal CAS Folder.

* The convenor/organiser should supply you with a Certificate at the conclusion of the meeting/course provided it is accredited by the ICGP.
