Annual General Meeting 2008
The ICGP Annual General Meeting was held in the Radisson Hotel from the 17th-18th of May with over 200 GPs in attendance. The theme of the AGM was "Towards 2013". At the close of the AGM, Chief Executive Fionan O'Cuinneagain remarked on the success of the event: "This annual conference, our 24th, followed on our highly successful conference of 2007 providing for the needs and interests of a wide range of members who deemed the conference, including the workshops, as highly relevant and informative."
Before the AGM was formally opened a number of satellite meetings and workshops were held including the CME Tutor Workshop and drugs misuse level 1 training.
On Saturday morning, a number of workshops were held covering a wide range of topics including presentations by the top four ranked submissions to the ICGP/ISQSH Quality Improvement Award, cognitive behavioural therapy, IT security, the Mental Health Act 2001 and men's health. All workshops were well attended.
The 2008 winner of the ICGP/ISQSH Quality Improvement Award for 2008 was announced during Saturday's session. The winner was Ms Julie Rogers (Practice Manager) and Dr Mark Rowe (Managing Partner) from Rowe Creavin Medical Practice, Waterford with their entry - full implementation of the GPIT guidelines No Data, No Business into their practice. Dr Joe Moran from Co Cork was runner-up with his entry on the formation of a disease-specific CME Group (Diabetes Interest Group), designed to help the participants improve the management of diabetes in their practices.
The ICGP 2007 AGM research poster and presentation section displayed the results of five research projects from GP registrars. The projects covered diverse topics highlighting the range of interesting research taking place in general practice by registrars. The presentations were of excellent quality and attracted much interest among the delegates. The research prize, sponsored by Merck Pharmaceutical, was awarded to Dr Elaine Walsh from the South East Training Programme. The title of the winning poster was "'Take Ten Minutes': A Dedicated Ten Minute Medication Review Reduces Polypharmacy in the Elderly."
Prof Tom Keane, Director of the National Cancer Control Programme, spoke on the National Cancer Programme and Dr Mark Walsh presented on the ICGP Strategic Plan 2008 - 2013.
The Foundation Lecture was delivered by Frank Sullivan, NHS Tayside and Professor of Research and Development in General Practice and Primary Care in the University of Dundee. On the topic of 'Bear's grease and soda water. 'The contribution of general practice to clinical research'.
On Sunday, Limerick GP Dr Michael Tangney, accepted the chain of office from outgoing president, Dr Charles Daly, at the closing ceremony of the AGM. The newly elected vice-president is Dr Liam Lacey from Limerick.
