Managing Alcohol Problems in Primary Care

Course Summary

This one-day course aims to assist GPs and practice nurses to structure appropriate interventions that are beneficial to patients and their families with alcohol related problems. The role of the GP and the Practice Nurse, a focus on family dynamics and further information on detoxification will also be provided. Please book early to avoid disappointment!

Overall aims of the course

Participants of this course will learn the methods of screening, detection and intervention for the range of problems that present in primary car. Brief interventions in the style of motivational interviewing will be taught and participants will also have an opportunity to delve into attitudinal issues.

  • Brief Interventions in Primary Care
  • Motivational Interviewing style
  • Guidelines for Intervention
  • Referral sources and options
  • Stigma and Other Barriers to Treatment
  • Family Issues and specifics on family dynamics
  • The role of the Practice Nurse
  • Treatment Options

Duration and format

This is a one day course, 9.15am - 4.30pm, comprising lectures, workshops and small group discussions. Maximum 25 participants - ideally comprising a mixture of GPs and practice nurses.
