Substance Misuse Level 1 Training Course
Course Summary
Under the Terms of the Methadone Treatment Protocol Services published by the Department of Health in 1998, any GP wishing to take part in the provision of treatment services to drug users must undertake training as provided by the ICGP.

About the Course
This course is open to members of the ICGP, 4th year GP Trainees and GPs only and takes approximately 3 hours to complete.
The online Level 1 Drug Treatment Programme is designed for GPs preparing to take patients under the Methadone Treatment Protocol and replaces the traditional classroom lecture format previously used for the Level 1 Training. Individual CME credits will apply for each GP participating. General practices can also take the programme and complete the CME assessment as a group. Practices will be advised on how to log in each individual GP if they plan to do the course in a group.
Overview of Programme
The online learning programme consists of 10 interactive video presentations, with each presentation ranging in duration from 6 to 25 minutes. The GP is required to access each of the presentations and then complete a multiple choice question (MCQ) module to provide a summative assessment.
Course Conditions
- In order to satisfactorily complete the programme a GP is required to view over 75% in the Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) module.
- Each GP will online access for 21 days only from the date of their enrolment by Niamh Killeen, niamh.killeen@icgp.ie. If after 21 days the participant has not completed the training programme, then access to the programme will be terminated.
- To view the video presentation modules each participant must have access to broadband with a minimum download speed of 1Mbps. If you do not have this broadband capacity please contact Niamh Killeen, ICGP - 01-6763705, niamh.killeen@icgp.ie
- MP3 files are for reference only. You must view 75% of each module to satisfactorily complete training.
CME Accreditation: 2 CME/5.5 External CPD Credits
Completion Time: To complete all modules and the MCQ Quiz will take approximately 3 hours in total.
