Certificate in Contraception - Practical Course
Course Summary
This course provides the practical training required to satisfy the final component required of doctors wishing to attain the Certificate in Contraception. This intensive two day course covers all aspects of contraception in a small group discussion format with practical stations and simulated patients. This course offers an alternative to attending the minimum six practical sessions with a Contraception Tutor, either in general practice or a family planning clinic to achieve satisfactory experience in this area.

Entry Requirements
All candidates must be:
1. Fully registered Medical Practitioners who are either:
- 4th year GP trainees.
- Obs and Gynae registrars.
- Established GPs in general practice.
2. Have successfully completed the part 1 - Certificate in Contraception Theory Course (now called the Reproductive and Sexual Health Course).
3. Have successfully completed the Gynaecological Examination requirement by one of the following options:
- Attended an O&G position.
- Attended a Gynaecological Clinic for minimum of 4 sessions under supervision of Consultant Gynaecologist; or
- Is a GP trainee who has been certified by their GP trainer.
Course Content
The areas covered on the course include:
- Simulated practice consultations/role play with simulated patients and family planning instructing doctors.
- Small group discussion.
- Practical stations.
- Debates.
What is the aim of the course?
To satisfy the practical component as outlined in the syllabus set by the Reproductive and Sexual Health (RSH) Committee. This intensive and interactive course will enable participants to explore practical areas in reproductive and sexual health.
Duration and Format
This course is run over 2 consecutive days using a small group discussion and practical stations, simulated patient format.
What are the Course Outcomes?
After the two days, participants should be more confident in delivering their theoretical knowledge of contraception and reproductive health information in a general practice setting. An assessment process is undertaken during the first day and candidates who do not have at least a minimum knowledge of contraception and reproductive health may fail to achieve certification.
