Indemnity: Practice Nurse
Q. We are currently recruiting for a practice nurse. What is the position with regards to nursing indemnity?
A. It is essential that the nurse has appropriate professional indemnity cover specific to practice nursing. On taking up employment, the nurse should provide the practice with the original certificate of professional indemnity; a copy of this should be maintained on the employees' records. In the same way as for GPs, the practice nurse's indemnity policy should be renewed annually and a copy of the renewal certificate maintained on the practice files. You should also notify your own medical indemnity company that the practice nurse is now employed and providing nursing services in the practice. Practice nurse indemnity insurance is provided by a number of organisations. Section 7 of the College's publication The Practice Nurse - A Guide to Nursing in General Practice provides further information on these issues.
