The aim of the ICGP Health in Practice (HiP) Programme is to promote and maintain good physical health, occupational health and psychological health and well being for GPs and their families. Worldwide literature reviews & research, and the opinions of the ICGP membership tell us:

  • It's not easy being a patient when you are a doctor!
  • Treating doctors isn't easy. HiP supports those who do, both network and non-network health professionals.
  • Doctors deny their own symptoms and illnesses, and delay seeking help or advice.
  • Doctors self-diagnose, self-investigate, self-prescribe, self-treat, self-refer and self-follow up. Picture your colleagues doing this!
  • There is nothing wrong with being sick if you are a doctor, what matters is that your illness or health concerns are dealt with appropriately. This may entail taking sick leave until you have recovered sufficiently to return to work. Society gives workers who are sick a right to take sick leave. You also have this permission. Take advice from health in practice if you are unsure.

What is the Health in Practice Programme?

The Health in Practice Programme consists of healthcare networks and an information service. HiP provides confidential healthcare through four networks. The four networks are:

  1. Network GPs - a GP for GP service.
  2. Network Occupational Physicians - for occupational health advice.
  3. Network Psychiatrists - for when you might need one.
  4. Network Counsellors, Psychologists and Psychotherapists - developing solutions, life management skills and coping resources to help resolve your work-related and personal problems.

Hip provides an information service by telephone, fax, email or post. Perhaps you have a work-related health query, or you are just simply worried about yourself and you're not sure where to go. HiP sources and distributes information on matters of doctors occupational health and personal health to all GPs and GPs in training on request or through workshops, presentations, publications, CME and faculty meetings and the college website. GPs family members are welcome to use the services of HiP too

All queries are dealt with in confidence.
