28 November 2008
print version send to a friend

This guide is written for general practitioners to advance their understanding of what they need to know when treating lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) people in the primary care setting. In addition to the general health needs of all primary care patients, there are specific health issues facing LGB people. They also face barriers to accessing health services which general practitioners can be instrumental in reducing or eliminating. This guide is intended to support general practitioners in their efforts to provide an appropriate and accessible primary care service to LGB people in their care.

This document has three main sections, which will address the most common questions and information gaps that general practitioners may have in relation to providing primary care to LGB people. These are:

  1. Sexual Orientation - concepts and language
  2. Health issues for LGB people
  3. Improving service provision to LGB patients

The appendix contains a glossary of terms, a services directory, a list of resources for general practitioners and references.
