Quality in Action in Irish General Practice

A new ICGP Publication from the Quality in Practice Committee entitled 'Quality in Action in Irish General Practice' was launched at the Winter Meeting on the 18th November in the IMI, Sandyford. The booklet contains fifteen of the best entries from the 2005 and 2006 Quality in Practice Improvement Award.

This innovative quality improvement competition was established by the ICGP Quality in Practice Committee in 2005 and repeated in 2006. Participants detailed improvements or innovations implemented in a general practice setting in Ireland, whether of a clinical or practice management nature. Entries from a wide range of primary care professionals including GPs, GP registrars, practice nurses and practice administrators were received.

Entries were judged according to their impact on general practice care in the Irish setting. In this regard special emphasis was given to the following aspects of the improvement or innovation:

  • Originality.
  • Simplicity of design.
  • Ease of implementation and ongoing use.
  • Ease of application to other general practices within Ireland.
  • Benefits derived from the improvement or innovation.
  • Evidence that the improvement or innovation made an impact on practice.

The ICGP hope that this booklet will encourage further interest in the prize next year and show that quality improvement is worthwhile, leads to a change in practice and can be undertaken in every practice. The booklet has been supported by an educational grant from the Irish Society for Quality and Safety in Healthcare and VIVAS Healthcare.
