Alternative Route to College Membership

Workforce shortages and changes to the registration of general practitioners as a result of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007 have had implications for Irish general practice and the ICGP.

A performance assessment route to MICGP for doctors currently working in Irish general practice but without formal GP training has been deemed necessary in order to optimise the current potential general practice workforce while ensuring the maintenance of standards in Irish general practice.

Pre-Application Process

The ICGP has undertaken a pre-application process by way of a survey.

This survey was based on the eligibility criteria as set out in the attached document entitled 'Eligibility Criteria'.

This pre-application process is now closed.

Anticipated application period

It is anticipated that the application period for this route to membership will open in autumn 2012.

Alternative Route to ICGP Membership Fee

There are substantial funding requirements in the establishment and implementation of the Alternative Route to ICGP Membership. It will, of necessity, be self-funded, i.e. based on application fees. It is likely that the application fee will be approximately €7,000.
