Written Papers 2012 - Exam Schedule, Rules & Information
About the Examination
The aim of the MICGP Examination assesses the performance of the candidate in the field of general family practice by assessing in three domains: cognitive, psychomotor and affective. The Examination assesses knowledge relevant to general practice in Ireland. Candidates are assessed in problem solving and communication skills. Candidates who pass the MICGP Examination are judged to be competent to provide a high standard of care in unsupervised general practice in Ireland.
Examination Entry Requirements 2012
For 2012, the various Exam modules are restricted to candidates relevant years of GP training as follows:
- SBA Module is available to candidates in all years of training
- MEQ & AKT Modules are available only to candidates in 2nd, 3rd or 4th years of GP training only
- Oral Examination Module is available only to candidates in their 3rd or 4th year of GP training
The AKT, MEQ and Oral Modules are available only to candidates in their later years of GP training as they require a significant level of experience of general practice to reach the required competency level. Candidates in their first year of GP training will not have accumulated sufficient experience and competency within general practice to successfully complete these modules.
Non-GP trainees who are applying for the examination must have their experience/training formally approved by the ICGP before making an application. Once approved, such applicants may sit any or all of the four examination modules.
Online Orientation Programme
An Online Orientation Programme is available for all Examination candidates. It was decided that the online orientation programme provided the best platform on which to provide candidates with a comprehensive description of the Examination and each individual Examination module. Members of the current Exam Development Committee, including Examination module conveners, are contributors and a recent MICGP graduate has also augmented the production of the programme.
By making the MICGP Online Orientation Programme available and easily accessible to all candidates we can assure the consistency and accuracy of the information disseminated and in so doing guarantee fairness to all candidates. It is hoped that the design of this self-directed online learning programme will enable both individual candidates and study groups to effectively prepare themselves for the MICGP Examination, the summative assessment of competency for Irish general practice.
Upon registration for an Examination Module(s) the candidate has automatic access to that module/s as well as a general overview of the MICGP Examination and practical strategies for engaging effectively with the MICGP Examination.
