National Laboratory Handbook for Ireland to support efficient use of laboratory resources

The National Clinical Programme for Pathology has published the first volume of a National Laboratory Handbook for Ireland. This is the first publication of its kind in Ireland.

The Handbook is designed to support the efficient use of laboratory resources. It contains national guidelines for common diagnostic problems, particularly those that are associated with high volumes or potential over-usage of laboratory investigations.

Volume 1 of the Handbook, contains concise guidelines and order sets for

Dr Gerard Boran, Clinical Lead of the National Clinical Programme for Pathology, said, "Our expectation is that healthcare staff will use clinical judgement in applying the general principles and recommendations contained in the national guidelines."

The National Pathology Handbook is available to download on the HSE website

The National Clinical Programme for Pathology is currently preparing Volume 2 of the National Laboratory Handbook and looks forward to engaging with colleagues across multiple specialties to ensure that the guidelines meet the needs of the healthcare system.

About the National Clinical Programme for Pathology

The National Clinical Programme for Pathology was established in 2011 as a joint initiative between HSE Clinical Strategy and Programmes Division and the Faculty of Pathology.

The programme aims to support all hospital clinical laboratories to achieve the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

The programme publishes guidelines and other resources for laboratories, all of which are available on the HSE website
