HIQA National Standards for Infection Prevention and Control in Community Services

HIQA have this week published the National Standards for infection prevention and control in community services. Please click here for more information.

ICGP was represented on the expert advisory group that developed these standards. A focus group was created within ICGP and this group's feedback helped to shape the College's formal response.

This ultimately provided improvements to the standards so that the unique GP perspective is now incorporated in them.

ICGP will assist its members to work towards compliance with these standards by developing GP specific resources and tools. Indeed many of our members are already compliant with these standards and it will largely be a matter of formalising procedures within our practices. There will be additional resources such as FAQs, education sessions at our national meetings and other supports available to you as they are developed and updated.

A good example of demonstrating compliance would be the antimicrobial stewardship policy for your practice. An example of this is available on the antibioticprescribing.ie portal on the HSE website.

It might be that working towards alignment with these standards affords you an opportunity to perform a relevant audit and thus help you with your annual PCS requirements.

ICGP is very aware of the cost and resource implications for GPs and we will continue to advocate on your behalf. Our aim is to assist you in easily incorporating these standards into your daily practice.
