Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

All information on this link relates to the 2019 GP trainee recruitment process.

If you have a query in relation to Recognition of Prior Learning, please contact Pauline Tierney –

Recognition of Prior Learning is available in 2019 for applicants who have successfully completed Basic Specialist Training in Medicine with the Royal College of Physician Ireland (RCPI) and completed all appropriate assessments (MRCPI Examinations Part I & Part II), at time of application.

For the 2019 intake, the ICGP will recognise blocks of training amounting to one academic year (July-July). This will allow applicants who are eligible to have a full year of training recognised to enter year two of a GP training program, therefore bypassing 1 year of the training process and shortening training from 4 years to 3 year.

The ICGP will facilitate an adaptation period to compensate for 'day release' content missed by the candidate having bypassed the first training year. Engagement with this adaptation is mandatory for applicants who have had prior learning recognised as part of this process.

Successful RPL applicants will be required to submit any relevant evidence of formative assessment and educational activities including Logbooks material detailing competency based learning outcomes achieved and individual post assessments for relevant hospital posts to the training scheme in a timely manner.

Required prior qualifications

In order to be eligible to make an RPL application you must have the following at time of application:

  • Certificate of Satisfactory Completion from the Royal College of Physicians Ireland in respect of Basic Specialist Training in Medicine.
  • Relevant Transcript (Part I & Part II) of examination results relevant examinations for Basic Specialist Training.

Please note, PDF copies of these documents must be uploaded with the application to be considered for RPL. Only the evidence clearly listed above will be accepted in respect of an RPL application. The closing date for applications is 15th November 2018.

The ICGP reserves the right to revert back to the applicant should further information be required. Failure to upload documents listed above at point of application may impact the assessment of your application.

Please note that the knowing provision of incorrect, inaccurate or deliberately misleading information will result in the immediate rejection of your RPL application without leave to reapply. Selection will be made on information and material provided during this process by the applicant and reference will NOT be made to your main application for a GP Training Place by the assessors.

RPL application does not automatically confer eligibility for a right to either RPL or a place on a GP Training Programme nor will it have an effect on your scheme preference already submitted. RPL offers will be made on the basis of training schemes ability to accommodate RPL and on candidate rank. Please note that all RPL decisions are final and are not open to appeal.
