Guidelines for the Management of Depression and Anxiety Disorders in Primary Care Released

The ICGP and the HSE proudly announce the release of the 'Guidelines for the Management of Depression and Anxiety Disorders in Primary Care'. These Guidelines are the first ever in the Republic of Ireland for the management of these two conditions in primary care.

They were developed in response to earlier research conducted by Mimi Copty, Project Director of Mental Health in Primary Care at the ICGP, which indicated that depression and anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions in the adult population.

The Guidelines provide recommendations based on current evidence for best practice in the management of depression and anxiety disorders including screening, assessment, diagnosis and management. The Guidelines provide step by step algorithms for the management of depression and anxiety disorders: two conditions which can be treated effectively in primary care.

The first edition of these Guidelines have been piloted in several GP practices and have proved to be effective and relevant to general practice. The latest edition of these Guidelines are being sent to all GPs and other primary health care providers in the Republic of Ireland.

On behalf of the ICGP, Mimi Copty would like to thank the Mental Health in Primary Care Steering Committee and the Clinical Guidelines Sub-Committee for their contribution to the development of these guidelines.

For additional copies of the Guidelines, please contact the ICGP on 01 676 3705 or alternatively an electronic copy can be downloaded below.
