Q. How do I become a methadone prescriber?

  • Log into www.icgp.ie and complete the Online Foundation Course in Substance Misuse.
  • Once you have completed the course successfully, contact your local GP or drug co-ordinator to begin the process of getting a Level 1 contract.
  • Stabilised patients can be transferred to your care once you have a Level 1 contract.
  • Once you have a contract, you can apply to the PCRS to have methadone scripts supplied to you.
  • When you have received a Level 1 contract, the HSE will provide you with the drug testing kits.
  • As a Level 1 prescriber, an annual audit is part of ongoing contractual requirements. Click here for details.
