LARC Training Pilot

Introduction

This programme is now closed; funding is no longer available.

Training in IUD insertions and subdermal implant insertions and removals can be done in general practice under the supervision of an ICGP LARC tutor. Many GP trainees want to get training in LARC insertions but do not have a LARC tutor in their own practice. The LARC training pilot was set up to facilitate these GP trainees to get training from a LARC tutor in another practice. There is a limited amount of funding available to pay the LARC tutor locum cover to facilitate them to pay a locum to cover them while they provide the training. The training can occur in the trainees practice or the LARC tutors practice.

How much will the LARC tutor be paid?

LARC tutors can claim €240 per half day training session, up to a maximum of 4 training sessions per trainee. If the trainee has not completed training within 4 sessions, he/she can apply to for further funding by emailing womenshealth@icgp.ie but further funding is not guaranteed.

The pilot has now been extended to include GPs in the community who are trained by a LARC tutor in another practice.

If you are a LARC tutor that is willing to provide training to a GP or GP trainee based outside of your own practice please contact ICGP at womenshealth@icgp.ieto be added to the list.

Who can apply?

GP trainees in 3rd or 4th year who get training from a LARC tutor from another practice. Any GP on the specialist register who gets training in LARC from a GP in another practice. It is advised that only those GPs and GP trainees, who are very experienced in contraception consultations, bimanual examination, passing speculum and counselling patients for LARC devices, should embark on LARC training. To maintain competence in LARC insertions/ removals, GPs should be regularly inserting and removing these devices. It is therefore advised that only those who intend to continue regularly inserting devices in the immediate future should embark on training.
