Q. What is a PDF?

A. Portable document format (pdf) is a file format for documents, originally developed by Adobe in 1993 and is now used to exchange documents between different computer systems. Most computers can open, display and print pdf documents. The documents look the same on all operating systems as they hold their layout and formatting. You can create a pdf using Adobe Acrobat software, but most people who have recent versions of Microsoft Word, 2007 on Windows and 2008 on Mac, can save their Word documents as pdf and thus facilitate seamless exchange. If you cannot open a pdf document, then Adobe makes available a free pdf reader available from http://get.adobe.com/reader/.
