Q. We want to start coding patients who have chronic diseases such as diabetes and asthma. What coding system should we use?

A. The accredited GP practice software systems have two coding systems built in. These are The International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC-2) and the Internal Classification of Disease (ICD-10). ICPC has a much smaller number of codes, is easier to use and suitable for most practices.

For example, here are some common ICPC codes:

  • Asthma R96
  • COPD R95
  • Obesity T82
  • Overweight T83
  • Diabetes insulin dependent T89
  • Diabetes non-insulin dependent T90
  • Heart failure K77
  • Atrial fibrillation/flutter K78

Talk to your GP practice software vendor to find out how to code in your practice software system.

A full list of ICPC-2 codes is available in the publications and reports section of the GPIT website at www.gpit.ie and there is also information on coding in the 'How To Leaflets' section.
