Q. We regularly have GP locums working in the practice. How should we manage their access and login to the practice software system?

A. Individual usernames and passwords are really important when you use a practice software system. They allow you to audit what each individual user is doing. Knowing who did what and when is important from a medico-legal perspective. If all you can deduce is that it was a locum, and you have no idea which one, then you have a problem. So set up each locum as they start work in the practice with a username, perhaps firstname.surname and a password. When the locum leaves, disable their account and provide a new account to the next locum. Talk to your practice software company about how best to do this with your system.
