Clinical Cultural Competence - A Needs Assessment of Postgraduate Training Requirements for the Medical Profession

A National Intercultural Healthcare Project has been established within the HSE recommending the provision of cultural competency training in a tiered and incremental fashion to all staff of the HSE.
This research aims to feed into Level 3 training Specialist Training for Professional Groups by analysing the training requirements of medical postgraduates and enabling SpRs to participate in the development of recommendations for future training which will be fed back to National Specialty and Programme Directors.

Objectives

AIM
To study the cultural competency training of Specialist Registrars (SpRs) and to make recommendations on the development of training programmes.

OBJECTIVES
To study the knowledge of SpRs in the area of cultural competence
To study the attitudes of SpRs towards cultural issues in medical practice
To assess the skills of SpRs in dealing with cultural issues in the workplace
To identify if there are any specific attributes of respondents which might be associated with better knowledge, skills and / or attitudes
To identify the extent of training received by SpRs in the area of cultural competency and to identify gaps in training
To study attitudes of postgraduate trainers to the area of cultural competency training
To make recommendations with regard to meeting future training needs for postgraduate medical trainees

A phased methodology is proposed incorporating
A review of relevant literature
Interviews with key informants including healthcare workers, equality and diversity officers, cultural mediators, training providers, representatives from NGOs and advocates for minority groups.
A clinical cultural competence questionnaire survey of current Specialist Registrars (SpRs) in Ireland
Focus groups with SpRs to discuss survey results, explore issues in further detail and develop training recommendations
A brief questionnaire survey of those involved in medical postgraduate training to include feedback on findings of the study to date
Completion and dissemination of recommendations on cultural competency training for the postgraduate medical profession
