There is a continuing need to improve the quality of care in general practice. This study aims to develop a set of meaningful quality indicators that can be used by practice staff to objectively assess broad aspects of their service.
The indicators are being developed in consultation with various stakeholders including GPs, practice nurses, practice managers and patient representatives. Using the consensus method, the Delphi technique, the validity of the indicators as measures of quality will be assessed by members from the various stakeholder groups. Indicators that emerge from this process will then be road-tested in a representative sample of practices to ensure that they are user-friendly and that reliable data can be obtained for them.
