Chikungunya Iceland ex Alicante Spain 

Iceland have reported three confirmed cases of autochthonous Chikungunya infections from Alicante, Spain, that have been identified in Iceland. Additionally one person is under investigation in Norway.

Index case

  • A 37-year-old Icelandic women, who was diagnosed with Chikungunya infection after returning to Iceland from a two-week vacation in Alicante, Spain, from 17 - 31 May.
  • Onset of symptoms was on 1 June and samples obtained on the 8 June, were positive in PCR for Chikungunya but PCR negative for Dengue and Zika virus.
  • Samples were also obtained from her five-year-old son and her sister who both had symptoms compatible with Chikungunya and both were PCR positive for Chikungunya.
  • Additionally, we received information about another sister of the index case, who was on vacation with them in Alicante, but lives in Norway. She also developed symptoms compatible with Chikungunya infection and samples have been taken in Norway. The test results are unknown but The Norwegian Institute of Public Health will do the necessary follow up.
