Application Criteria

Previous General Practice Experience – All Pathways

All general practice experience, as indicated, must have been acquired within 10 years preceding the application closing date:

  • 31 January 2019 (if applying for assessment in 2019)
  • 31 January 2020 (if applying for assessment in 2020)

General Practice Experience gained prior to 31 January 2009 is not applicable for the MICGP-AR process and cannot be used to calculate a candidates GP experience. Hospital post experience, however, may have been acquired more than 10 years preceding 31 January 2009

 

Application Pathways 

Applicants for the Membership of ICGP – Alternative Route (MICGP-AR) MUST satisfy one of the following pathways.

Note: General practice experience gained outside the Republic of Ireland will NOT be considered. Hospital experience outside the Republic of Ireland will be considered eligible provided it has been approved for postgraduate training by the postgraduate training body of the country in which the post was completed.

Candidates will be required to supply independent verification of the post's approval; this is subject to audit and verification by the ICGP.

 

Pathway One

Applicants must hold either current general registration (or other specialist registration) with the Irish Medical Council on the date of application.

Hold a minimum of eight years' verified full-time (or equivalent part time) General Practice experience in Ireland (ROI) gained in the last 10 years by point of application.

Be able to provide eight years supporting documentation in respect of Medical Indemnity (General Practice).

Applicants must be working in Irish general practice of for a minimum of two years full-time (or equivalent part-time) as of:

  • 31 January 2019 (if applying for assessment in 2019)
  • 31 January 2020 (if applying for assessment in 2020)

Verification of General Practice posts will be required.

 

Pathway Two

Applicants must hold either current general registration (or other specialist registration) with the Irish Medical Council on the date of application.

Hold a minimum of five years' full-time (or equivalent part-time) General Practice experience in Ireland (ROI) gained in the last 10 years by point of application AND hospital training which is defined as: three six-month SHO hospital posts completed in Ireland which must include posts in medicine and/or paediatrics.

Be able to provide five years supporting documentation in respect of Medical Indemnity (General Practice).

Verification of General Practice and Hospital posts will be required.

Applicants must provide evidence that the posts were recognised for general professional training.

Note: Only hospital experience for which independent verification is provided will be considered. Verification must be provided on the official verification of hospital experience form.
