What is Mentoring?

Mentoring in a professional context is a well structured yet informal, confidential, learning relationship, which takes place (as mutually convenient) over an agreed time frame. It is led by the mentee and focused on priorities that he/she would find useful to think through.

A mentee can expect their mentor to pay careful attention to their situation; listening actively and objectively to their thinking and questions, without judgment or interruption. To help the mentee make progress with their thinking the mentor will share insights, thoughts and questions that occurred as they listened, in addition to learnings from their own experience. Through listening and thinking together, as a partnership, the mentee and mentor can generate and create new, and fresh, thinking and actions for progress. All conversations are confidential.

It is helpful if Mentees approach the conversation

  • openly; coming with questions to think through, in addition to their own initial thoughts around areas of challenge/opportunity. This enables clear outcomes to emerge from the process;
  • ready to explore what they really want out of their professional practice and work;
  • ready to actively reflect on their own situation and how they are resourcing themselves/their practice;
  • prepared to commit to learning: putting into practice actions or new initiatives they think will help them make progress;
  • prepared to experiment, to be curious and optimistic
  • be able and open to accept constructive feedback and observations, taking responsibility for setting their own framework for accountability in order to measure progress and development
