Change to Medical Council retention of registration form

Please note that the Medical Council of Ireland is introducing the following declaration to their annual retention of registration form:

'My annual Statement of Participation as of May 2020 demonstrates that I am meeting my ongoing maintenance of professional competence requirements' (YES/NO)

The Medical Council has advised that any doctor who makes a false declaration may be subject to regulatory action.

Select Yes, if your 2019 2020 Statement of Participation reflects that you have recorded the required activity in all PCS categories.

Select No, if your 2019 2020 Statement of Participation reflects that you have not recorded the required activity in all PCS categories.

To ensure that your Statement of Participation reflects your CPD activity, you have to record activity to your ePortfolio on or before the statutory deadline of 30 April 2020.

The Medical Council checks with the Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies for confirmation of compliance. This does not apply to doctors who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Have notified the ICGP of relevant leave of more than 3 months
  • Completed a Training Scheme partway through the PCS year
  • Will be accepting a place on a Training Scheme in 2020
  • Joined the Medical Council register and the ICGP PCS after the 01 of June 2019
  • Moved overseas and are predominantly practising overseas (and less than 30 days per PCS year in Ireland)

To meet the PCS requirements, you need to record the following activity by 30 April each year:

  • 1 clinical / practice audit
  • 50 CPD credits including;
  • 20 external credits
  • 20 internal credits
  • 5 personal learning credits
  • 5 additional credits in any of the above or in research and teaching

To help you meet your PCS requirements, ICGP has developed a wide range of supports, CPD activities and audit templates, which you can find at www.icgp.ie/pcs

The Medical Council has made a further change to their annual retention of registration form, following the changes made in 2019.

Please be aware that the Medical Council will ask you to make the following declarations when completing your 2020 retention of registration process:

'I am enrolled in a professional competence scheme in Ireland and have paid my Scheme enrolment fee for the Scheme year 2020 – 2021' [TICK BOX]

'My annual Statement of Participation as of May 2020 demonstrates that I am meeting my ongoing maintenance of professional competence requirements' [YES/NO]

The Medical Council have confirmed that they will be monitoring doctor's compliance with CPD requirements, as defined in the Medical Practitioners Act 2007.

ICGP raises your Statement of Participation annually in May and all activity you have recorded to your ePortfolio on or before the statutory deadline of 30th April is included on this Statement. Activity added after this date will not appear on your Statement.

As in 2019, the Medical Council has asked all Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies to send them the Medical Council Registration Number (MCRN) and name of all Registered Medical Practitioners who have not met their annual PCS requirements for the 2019 2020 PCS year. If you were on leave from practice for three months or more during the PCS year (e.g. sick leave, maternity leave), please email professionalcompetence@icgp.ie with the dates that you were on leave from active practice.

NB: to ensure that you are not included on the non-compliance list, please add all your PCS activity to your ePortfolio by Thursday 30 April 2020.

Please be advised that the Medical Council has informed ICGP that doctors who make a false declaration during the annual retention process may be subject to regulatory action, which could result in sanction, limitations on your practice, suspension or erasure from the register. Therefore, it is important that you incorporate the changes instigated by the Medical Council, from the starting date.

We would appreciate if you would direct any enquiries regarding your Medical Council annual retention of registration process to pc@mcirl.ie.
