Five Things You Need to Know About Professional Competence

  1. As of May 2011, all doctors on the Medical Council register are legally obliged to maintain their professional competence by enrolling in professional competence schemes and following requirements set by the Medical Council. Click here for the scheme requirements
  1. In order to maintain your enrolment on the scheme, you need to pay an annual fee. The annual fee of €240 is set by the IMC. You can renew your enrolment online and pay this fee using Visa, Laser or Mastercard. You will also be asked to review the details you entered last year to ensure that these details are correct and up to date.
  2. If you are enrolling for the first time, then you will need to provide contact details and some general work details. If you are a non ICGP member and are on the general division of the register, you will be asked to provide further training and work experience details. You application will need to be reviewed first before you can be accepted onto the scheme.
  3. Each professional competence year runs from 1 May – 30 April. The Statement of Participation for that year is generated in May and will reflect what you have recorded on your ePortfolio. Therefore, you should aim to have all your activity recorded before the end of April if you would like it to be registered on your statement. The statement is a key document – this is the document you will need to submit to the IMC if selected for their audit. The statement will also show if your record has been verified by the ICGP and if corrective action has been identified based on this verification process.
  4. You should retain evidence of all activities recorded, in case you are randomly chosen for a verification process or audit. Apart from the verification process or audit, you do not need to submit evidence of activities to us or to the Medical Council. You are encouraged to upload evidence of participation in CPD activities to your ePortfolio. Click here for guidance on how to attach documents
