Certificate Course in Addiction Management in Primary Care

This course builds on the learning from the Foundation Course and aims to provide participants with in-depth information on recent developments in diagnosis and management of addiction problems including alcohol, prescription drugs and illicit substances and the theoretical framework to assess, manage and refer appropriately patients who misuse substances.

Participants of this course will obtain a clear understanding of:

  • common assessment tools used in addiction 
  • evidence based interventions
  • common referral and rehabilitation pathways

Many of the skills acquired on this course (including communication and counselling skills) are applicable across a range of medical problems which may present in a range of clinical settings.

  • This course is a requirement to become a Level 2 OST prescriber
  • It is not necessary to be a Level 1 OST prescriber to partake in this course.

  • MUST have completed the Foundation Course in Addiction Management.
  • GPs, registered medical practitioners, registrars in general practice, psychiatry or other relevant disciplines.
  • Note: It is desirable that the candidate is working with addiction or is planning to do so.


  • 3 months, includes 2 compulsory workshops, eLearning modules and course projects

  • Addiction Management in Primary Care Certificate is awarded for full participation at workshops and successful completion eLearning and course work.
  • A maximum of 40 CPD credits will be awarded for this course.
