General practitioners to discuss how advances in technology can improve and influence patient care

Healthcare services for patients, and between health professionals, are changing profoundly thanks to new technologies, and the challenges and opportunities presented for general practice by these new technologies will be discussed and shared at this year's Annual Conference and AGM of the Irish College of General Practitioners in Wexford in May.

The theme of this year's gathering is "Designing the Future GP", and participants will hear from keynote speakers including the HSE's Chief Information Officer Richard Corbridge on designing the future GP, Tom O'Dowd on "General Practice - Where We've Come From and Where Are We Going?", and Dr Conor O'Shea, National Coordinator, GPIT Group ICGP on "Your Patient is Online!", on remote consultations, social media, and patient portals.

The College Foundation Lecture on Saturday morning will be presented by Prof. Roar Maagaard, GP and Associate Professor, WONCA Europe Executive member (Denmark) on the lessons to be learnt from the reform of general practice in Denmark.

"This is a good time to examine the opportunities and benefits of new technology within the future primary care model" said Dr Mark Murphy, Chair of Communications, ICGP. "This range of speakers will enable members to learn and contribute to this discussion. The internet and smartphones have changed how we do a lot of everyday things, but we must never lose sight of the importance of person-to-person interaction with patients, and the central role of the consultation should not lose people in the technology."

The conference will include a range of workshops on a variety of topics of interest to GPs including the management of multi-morbidity, antibiotic and infection control in nursing homes, mental health and eating disorders, and pregnancy and antenatal care. A College Council meeting will be held on the Sunday morning of the conference.

The Annual General Meeting the Irish College of General Practitioners will take place in the Clayton White's Hotel in Wexford on Friday 12th to Sunday the 14th May.
