Ultrasound in general practice

11 December 2017

Q. How should ultrasound images be stored in general practice?

A. The preferred setup for managing Ultrasound images is to transmit and view the images in the DICOM stand-ard. Your ultrasound machine should create and transmit DICOM images to your GP practice software system. The images should be stored in the individual patient record as a DICOM image and viewed with a DICOM viewer.

A US company called Butterfly is due to release an ultra-sound machine in 2018 based on an iPhone. It has the potential to change how we think about ultrasound in pri-mary care.
