Overdose Management

Programme Design

The Irish College of General Practice (ICGP) in conjunction with the HSE Inclusion Health Office have developed a training video on overdose management that is now available to all members. The video is approximately 30 minutes long and is followed by 10 MCQ questions.

Programme Aim

Drug related deaths are an important and growing global public health issue. There is a general consensus in the drug treatment community that this public health concern does not get the priority or importance needed to address the increasing numbers of young people dying of drug overdose.People who use opioids and people who inject drugs (PWIDs) are of increased risk of drug related deaths. Within this community, polydrug (particularly benzodiazepines and alcohol), homeless and older drug users are at further risk.New preliminary figures from the Health Research board (HRB) on drug-related deaths show there were 409 poisoning deaths in 2020.Naloxone, an opioid antagonist is extremely effective in reversing opioid-related overdose and can play an important role in preventing fatal overdoses
