Objective: To evaluate 'perceptions of the participants in an Irish GP Training scheme impact on themselves of an additional 12 months' of training following the extension of the standard 3-year general practice vocational training to a 4 year training programme.
Design: Qualitative study using focus groups.
Setting: General practice specialist training in the South Eastern GP Training Scheme in the Republic of Ireland.
Participants: Six general practitioner registrars and seven trainers involved in the additional 12 months' training. Six general practitioners who have just completed and qualified from the 3-year vocational training programme in the Southeast will act as controls for our study group.
