Health Inequalities and General Practice in areas of deprivation on the island of Ireland

Author/Researcher: Dr. Philip Crowley

Description

This report explores the issues affecting general practices in urban and rural areas of deprivation with a view to informing policy and strategy on general practice development. A review the literature and a survey of the GP members of the two colleges were carried out.

Objectives

The literature on issues facing the delivery of primary care in urban and rural deprived areas demonstrates the extra demand and need for primary care services in these areas. It also highlights the role of general practice in tackling the health inequalities faced by patients in deprived areas. The ICGP carried out a survey of its membership in January 2005 to explore these issues. The RCGP then supported a survey of its members in Northern Ireland in July 2005 and the results were compared.
