The primary purpose of the study was to describe Irish general practitioners’ experience, attitude and in sights concerning elder abuse.

Objectives

The objectives of the study were:
1. To understand the phenomenon of elder abuse and self-neglect from the perspective of GPs
2. To ascertain the past experience and insights of GPs concerning elder abuse and self-neglect
3. To discover barriers and supports in the detection and management of elder abuse cases
4. To document the types of abuse and self-neglect encountered by GPs
5. To identify referral pathways and interventions of GPs in Ireland who have encountered cases of elder abuse and self-neglect
6. To document recommendations from GPs in terms of enhancing detection and intervention.

The study consisted of a survey and in-depth interviews.
