Preparation of infant formula

Regional Department of Public Health colleagues have notified HPSC of a number of cases of verocytotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) in infants.

The infant cases all live in households who acquire their drinking water from a private well and whose parents have used an automatic machine to prepare powdered infant formula for the cases.

These two exposures common to the cases may be coincidental.

For information, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland does not recommend the use of automatic machines to prepare bottles of powdered infant formula because there is insufficient data available to verify the safety and efficacy of these machines.

Safefood provides information on making up infant formula linked here.
