The Irish College of General Practitioners congratulates Dr Rita Doyle on her election as President of the Irish Medical Council

Wicklow GP has been the ICGP nominee on Council since 2013.

The Bray-based GP Dr Rita Doyle has been elected as President of the Irish Medical Council.

Dr Doyle is a respected and highly experienced doctor; with over 30 years' experience in general practice.

She is the Medical Council's first woman president.

Dr Doyle has been involved with the College from its foundation and has actively contributed to General Practice over many years. She has also held many key roles in the College including Chair Board of Censors, member of ICGP Executive, Assistant National Director of C.M.E and CME tutor. Dr Doyle held office as ICGP President from 2011 to 2012.

Dr Doyle has also served as ICGP nominee on the IMC since 2013 and is Chair of the Wicklow Faculty of the ICGP.

The Chairman of the Irish College of General Practitioners, Dr John Gillman, welcomed her election.

"As a General Practitioner Dr Rita Doyle brings a different perspective to the role; a career in general practice is reflective of the totality of patient care from infancy to end of life, the community and familial context, and brings a unique and privileged insight into the lives of patients. The quality of communications and frequency of interactions with patients are also characteristic of general practice."

"Dr Doyle's elevation to President of the Medical Council demonstrates to younger colleagues that one can make a difference when one has pride and love for the profession, an openness to learning by doing and giving beyond the immediate clinical job and a willingness to get involved not just to comment. The person and the profession is the richer from this," said Dr Gillman.

"Her character, courage of conviction, sensitivity and fair-mindedness shall guide the Irish Medical Council through the challenges ahead and shall set the course for compassionate practical regulation."

He added:

"Dr Doyle has an exemplary track record throughout her career, and is held in high regard by her peers. I wish her well in her tasks ahead and am confident her inspirational leadership shall guide the Medical Council well."

Dr Rita Doyle is one of only two GPs elected to the Irish Medical Council.

She is a graduate of UCD, and has been involved in general practice for over 30 years. She is based at the Bray Family Practice, Co. Wicklow and is a GP Trainer.
