Irish College of General Practitioners welcomes the clarity brought by the referendum outcome.

More detailed information will be required in designing and resourcing services for those with crisis pregnancies.

The Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) welcomes the clarity now brought by the outcome of the referendum on the repeal of the 8th amendment to the Constitution.

The ICGP is the professional and training body for general practitioners in Ireland. The College made a submission to the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment which can be found here

The ICGP awaits the passing of amending legislation for the management of crisis pregnancy.

As recommended by the report of the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment, legislation must be accompanied by measures and policies which will seek to address and minimize crisis pregnancies, including comprehensive contraceptive services and sexual health education programmes.

More detailed information will need to be gathered to inform legislators, and to enable the Department of Health, together with the post-graduate training bodies and the representative bodies, to comprehensively draw up the detail and resourcing of services for those with crisis pregnancies.
