(8th March 2024) The Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) is the professional body for general practice in Ireland. The ICGP is the representative organisation for education, training and standards in general practice with 4,200 members, and 1,044 trainees in supervised practice. It is responsible for training GPs on a four-year National Training programme.
Recent appointments have seen an increase in the number of women in senior leadership roles in the College including:
Dr Deirdre Collins has served as Chair of the Board of the ICGP since 2023, and a member of the College's Board since 2019. A GP in Kilcullen, Co Kildare, Dr Collins has been actively involved in the College for many years, including involvement with Faculty and organising educational meetings. Dr Collins graduated from Trinity College Dublin and she completed her GP training in Dublin.
Professor Claire Collins is the Chief Operating Officer of the ICGP after carrying out over 18 years as Director of Research for the College. She is Visiting Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, Dept. of Public Health and Primary Care, Ghent University and has also contributed to Research with EGPRN. She is closely involved in the Wonca Europe 2024 Conference which will be held in Dublin this coming September.
Dr Suzanne Kelly grew up in Dublin, and is a partner in her GP practice in Ballincollig, in Cork. She graduated from UCD specialising in General Practice. She had a special interest in Diabetes management and acted as Clinical Lead for Diabetes before taking on the Assistant Medical Director role.
A recent appointee to this role, Dr Cathy Cullen spent over two years developing GP Training in Malaysia as part of the Malaysia Ireland Training Programme for Family Medicine. She has worked in general practice for over 30 years.
The Chief Executive Officer of the ICGP, Fintan Foy, said: "Today is a day to celebrate and recognise the huge role that women leaders are playing in the growth and development of the Irish College of General Practitioners. As we prepare to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the College's foundation, we are delighted to have a College that recognises and supports the leadership of women alongside men in a profession that benefits hugely from the talent and professionalism of women GPs in their practices, and in advocating for their patients and for general practice in the health service."
