Substance Misuse Training
Under the terms of the Methadone Treatment Protocol Services published by the Department of Health in 1998, any GP wishing to take part in the provision of treatment services to drug users must undertake training as provided by the ICGP.
There are two levels of training:
Level 1 Training
It is required that a Level 1 GP can treat stabilised opiate dependent persons in their own practice. Patients may be referred from Health Board Drug Treatment Centres, satellite clinics, or Level 2 GPs. » read more
Level 2 Training
To be eligible for Level 2 training, a GP must have full accreditation at Level 1. To achieve full accreditation at Level 1, the GP must have managed a minimum of five patients in the primary care setting for at least one year and have had a successful audit. » read more
