Membership By Examination
The Membership Examination consists of four stand alone modules: three written papers and an oral examination. The exam takes place once a year and applications for the examination will be available on the ICGP website from October to January each year. Notification of dates of exam/deadline for applications will be posted to the ICGP website examination section.

GP Training in Ireland
All GP trainees in recognised training programmes in Ireland must pass the MICGP Examination to be eligible for membership of the ICGP, entry onto the Specialist Division of the Register and Certificate of Specific Training/Acquired Rights. Before election to membership, applicants must hold a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Training (CSCT) issued by their GP training programme.
Self Structured Training
Doctors who have undertaken self structured training are required to obtain prior approval of training/experience before applying to sit the MICGP examination. Contact micgpexam@icgp.ie.
- Self Structured Training (in practice as at 1st of January 1995): Applicants must have undertaken a programme of self-structured training in general practice approved by the College and have been established in independent practice for two years as at the 1st of January 1995. Furthermore, the applicant is required to be in continuous practice in Ireland for a period of 5 years from 1995 to date of application. On successful completion of all 4 modules of the Examination applicants will be eligible for election to membership of the College. See Appendix 1b below for more information.
- Self Structured Training (completed by July 2002): Doctors applying under this category will have undertaken a programme of self structured training in general practice approved by the College. To be eligible under this category, doctors must have commenced post internship training prior to 31st December 1994 and to have completed the required training on or before 30th June 2002. Prior approval of training/experience is required before applying to sit the Examination. See Appendix 1c below for more information.
