Can I, as a GP trainee, do locum work?

As a GP trainee, you are required to be registered on the trainee specialist division of the Medical Council register. Whilst registered on the trainee specialist division, you are limited to practising within the scope of your training post, the content of which is determined by the post graduate training body.

General practice training schemes are designed to be full-time and require that the trainee is fully committed and utilises available work time for the training scheme.

The Irish Medical Council advises that GP trainees should not receive or take up any offer of locum appointments outside of their training scheme, in a non-training capacity.

All clinical sites should be aware of this when offering locum contracts.
