Q. One of the GP partners is a whiz at computers, but when he is on holidays minor problems remain unsolved. Any advice?

A. When you are filling staff positions, whether for a new GP, practice manager, practice nurse or practice secretary, it is a good idea to include IT proficiency as one of your requirements. That way you can build up your in-practice support resources. If one GP is really good, then he or she should teach another staff member as new problems arise and are solved, to ensure the knowledge permeates through the practice.
