The ICGP Research Department is delighted to announce the winners of the 2020 Research and Audit Awards.

Best Published Paper Award

The ICGP Best Published Paper award acknowledges general practice researchers who have disseminated their research findings by publication in a peer-reviewed journal. This award is sponsored by the ICGP Research Department. 

Winner: Dr Brendan Crosbie, 'A real-time measurement of general practice workload in the Republic of Ireland: a prospective study'

ICGP Irish Skin Foundation Dermatology Research/Audit Bursary

This bursary is sponsored by the Irish Skin Foundation and was created to encourage trainees in general practice to undertake a dermatology-related research/audit project. Research bursaries are awarded to projects aligned with the focus of ISF's work: Improving outcomes or quality of life for people living with chronic inflammatory skin conditions, or the prevention of skin cancer. 

1st place: Dr Deirdre Smith, Dr Caoimhe Houlihan, and Dr Lisa McNamee, 'A primary care study to investigate the prevalence and enhance the awareness of cardiovascular comorbidity amongst patients diagnosed with psoriasis in two Dublin GP practices'

2nd place: Dr Fareeda Borhan, 'Sun Protection and SPF counselling for Skin Presentations in General Practice'

3rd place: Dr Liam O'Halloran, 'Improving the availability and utilization of extemporaneous products in chronic skin conditions in primary care'

Dr Jim Slein Research Bursary in Substance Misuse or Health Inequalities/Inequity

The Dr Jim Slein Bursary acknowledges general practice researchers who have undertaken a research project investigating substance misuse or health inequality/inequity. This grant is kindly supported by Dr Jim Slein's family. 

Winner: Dr Patrick O'Donnell, '"There is people like us and there is people like them, and we are not like them." Understanding Social Exclusion – A qualitative study'

Dr John Carroll Rural Doctor Research Bursary

This grant is specifically offered for general practice research focused on a topic related to practicing as a rural GP or in a rural area carried out by a GP or GP Trainee. This grant has been kindly donated by Dr John Carroll's family.

Winners: Dr William Hutch and Dr Brendan Payne, 'Rural Irish General Practice Doctors Bag and Emergency Bag Audit 2020'

ICGP PCS Annual Audit Prize

The ICGP PCS Annual Audit prize acknowledges a GP audit conducted by an ICGP PCS enrolee in the last 2 years. The ICGP Department of Research developed this bursary in conjunction with the ICGP Professional Competence Scheme committee. 

Winner: Dr Irina Berkun, 'A Clinical Audit on the Uptake of Cervical Smears in General Practice'
